Who builds the guardrails, and why

A small technical team in Timișoara, Romania, focused on one problem: making algorithmic trading execution safer and more disciplined for independent traders and small funds.

What Highland Society is — in plain terms

Highland Society is a software platform for automating trading strategy execution with mandatory risk controls built into the pipeline. We are not a brokerage, not an investment adviser, and not a signal provider. We build the infrastructure that connects your existing strategy — however you generate your signals — to a live broker account, with a risk-management layer that enforces the rules you set before any order is submitted. Our clients are independent retail traders and small proprietary trading operations across the EU who already know what they want to trade and need a reliable, disciplined execution environment to do it. We started development in Timișoara in 2021 with a team of three engineers, all of whom had previously built execution infrastructure for larger financial institutions and chose to focus on the underserved retail and small-fund segment. By the end of 2022 we had onboarded our first twelve paying clients; by mid-2024 that number had grown to just over 140 active accounts across nine EU countries.

How we work, and what we won't promise

Our development process is deliberate and narrow in scope. We add a new broker connector only when we can test it against the live sandbox and verify fill behaviour across multiple order types — that process typically takes four to six weeks per broker. We add new risk-control parameters only when multiple clients have requested the same capability and we can implement it without creating configuration complexity that leads to user error. We do not release features on a fixed monthly cadence; we release them when they work correctly. What we can't promise: our platform cannot guarantee profitable trading outcomes. Backtest results are historical simulations with real limitations around slippage, data quality, and market regime change. Risk controls prevent limit breaches but do not eliminate market risk — a gap open or a flash crash can move through a stop. We are transparent about these limits in our documentation and in every conversation with prospective clients, because a client who understands the tool is a client who uses it correctly.

Three things that shape how we operate

Risk-first design

Every feature request is evaluated against one question first: does this make the platform safer to use, or does it introduce new ways to override risk discipline? Features that primarily serve convenience at the expense of safety get deprioritised.

Transparency over marketing

We publish honest documentation about what backtest results do and don't tell you. We don't present equity curves from cherry-picked strategies on our website. If a broker connector has a known limitation, it's in the docs before you connect.

EU-scoped operation

We serve EU traders, operate under EU data protection law, and store all client data within EU-based infrastructure. We don't currently serve clients outside the EU — not because of technical limits, but because staying in one regulatory jurisdiction keeps our compliance straightforward.
